So, you’ve gotten the Garmin GPS and you’ve loaded MapSource on your computer. But just how handy are you with those GPS tools? Do you prefer the Hand Tool, the Route Tool or the Selection Tool? Or do you just wish for a bigger hammer when it comes down to do some GPS routing or sharing files? You’re not alone!

We can help hone some of those GPS skills, though! We are going to have a GPS Training and Sharing class on Saturday, June 25th, from 1000 to 1400 and you’re invited. We have the pleasure of hosting Herman van Beek as a guest presenter to guide us through the intricacies of Garmin MapSource and the creating, downloading, uploading and sharing of route files.

And thanks to Andy, we are going to do the training in the pure comfort of a professional training environment. We’ll be holding the class in the Training Room of the North Richland Hills Fire Station at 7202 Dick Fisher Drive in North Richland Hills. Lunch will be served for a nominal fee – we’re going to grill up some brats and dogs for lunch and we’ll have lunch in the break room next door to the training room.

Due to the limited size of the training facilities we will need to limit the participation to 32 folks. We’ve put together an online registration form that will collect your contact information and GPS related experience. That will allow us to contact you with any updates and provide some information to better tailor the class to your needs. Click here to register for the class. To see who has registered for the class, you can visit here.

We will be maintaining a wait list, so register if you want to attend. Likewise, if your plans change and you can’t make the class, please let us know so we can release any vacancy to the next person on the wait list.

Come join us for a real learning opportunity to explore the capabilities of your GPS system and create and share some exciting motorcycle routes. Get your questions answered and share your expertise while enjoying some great company and great information. Put Saturday, June 25th on your calendar and register now!

PS – the class will be held in lieu of the club’s 4th Saturday ride in June.

Invitation to the 2010 BMWDFW Spring Picnic at the Ranch

All 2011 BMWDFW club members are invited to the Spring Picnic on Saturday May 21. Sharon Seelig, with some minor assistance from Ralph Schwartz, will host the event at Sharon’s ranch NE of Stephenville. After breakfast at LePeep on May 21 Tourmeister Vince Breckner will lead a ride on back roads to the picnic. We encourage as many of you to ride as can, the countryside is beautiful this time of year. Members and spouses or S.O.s that will be riding or driving 4 wheelers to the picnic on their own may use the written directions at the end of this invitation. Everyone should plan to arrive about 12:45 to 1:00 PM. You are welcome to hike around the ranch after lunch; walking shoes or boots are advised.

The hosts will assemble the food and soft drinks/tea/water at the picnic sight. We will be serving Schwartzenburgers with secret spices and additives, burger fixin’s, hot and cold side dishes of various kinds and a little something sweet at the end. A modest donation is requested from those partaking of the meal to defray the cost of the food and drinks. The price will be set once we have all the groceries but you should plan on about $5 per person. For those wanting a second Schwartzenburger, and who wouldn’t, it will be $3. All payments are on the honor system and will go into the donations jar at the picnic.

Please RSVP to Ralph and Sharon no later than Saturday, May 14 by sending an email to texas254@tx.rr.com or confirm by phone 972.821.6484 or fill out the form below. Let me know if you are coming and the number in your party so each of you are assured of a Schwartzenburger all your own.

Directions to the BMWDFW Spring Picnic at the Ranch: (Warning! Do NOT rely on any internet based or GPS mapping software or you will end up on a dirt road somewhere north of where the picnic is.)

For most folks; get yourself southbound on US 377 just south of I-20 in Benbrook. Continue southwest on US 377 through Granbury, Tolar and Bluff Dale. Continue 6 mi southwest of Bluff Dale on US 377. When the southbound lane becomes two lanes, move to the right lane. Within a mile you will see the small CR 513 sign, slow down; make a hard right onto CR 513 into Timber Hills Estates. Go 0.2 mi northwest on CR 513 until you see a two-story house on your right, then make a hard left onto CR 514 just before you hit the barb wire fence and go 0.2 mi southwest to 654 CR 514 (2nd drive on your right and the house number, 654, is in stone near the base of the mail box). Turn right onto the rock hard pack driveway and proceed to the single story house. Please try to park bikes on the concrete or hard pack driveway near there without blocking the main loop drive that goes past the front of the house. Four wheelers should park on the main loop drive in the front of the house. PLEASE, do not park on the yard! There is a sprinkler system in the yard. The driveway will easily hold all bikes and cages. We’ll put signs up where you are to turn and hope they don’t blow over.

If lost call Ralph, 972.821.6484, or Sharon, 254.965.7758. (Note: Ralph will be busy cooking and may become grumpy if interrupted too many times…better call Sharon, she will be cooking too but she’s much nicer.)

SEE YOU AT THE PICNIC!

BMW Motorrad debuted the new K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL at the Intermot motorcycle show in Cologne, Germany and stateside at Jay Leno’s Garage in Burbank, California. With these new models, BMW motorcycles are now available for the first time with a 6-cylinder in-line power unit developed in-house. The two touring motorcycles have a distinctive appearance, inspiring a desire to ride at first sight.

With the most compact in-line 6-cylinder engine in serial motorcycle production to date, the K 1600 GT and the K 1600 GTL offer a new level of riding dynamics, comfort and agility in a luxurious package suitable for covering long distances. With an engine output of 160 bhp and a maximum torque of 129 pound-feet, the 6-cylinder engine provides superb power and performance in all conditions.

Lightest and most compact serial production 6-cylinder in-line engine in a motorcycle > 1000 cc
Previously, the in-line arrangement of six cylinder motorcycle engines resulted in either very long or very wide frame construction, which led to motorcycle designs with drawbacks in chassis geometry, weight distribution and center of gravity. This where the K 1600 GT and K 1600 GTL break new ground, with a compact engine design in a well-balanced package.

Weighing 226 pounds, the engine is the lightest serially produced 6-cylinder in-line engine for motorcycles in the class > 1000 cc. The engine is also significantly narrower in width than all other 6-cylinder in-line motorcycles in serial production to date. The overall lightweight construction of these motorcycles at 703 lbs. for the K 1600 GT and 767 lbs. for the K 1600 GTL make these new touring bikes among some of the lightest bikes in their segment.
